I haven’t owned a bike with no gears for nearly 30 years - or since I graduated to a Raleigh Battlewagon (I limited edition Chopper - god only knows how much it would be worth now!). Anyway I’ve been toying with the idea of dabbling with this single speed lark for a while now. I’ve looked at the offerings from On-One and the like, but never been able to justify the £500+ asking price for a new steed.

That was until an advert in the STW classifieds came up for a Genesis iO for £250. I nearly bit the blokes hand at that price and went to collect it from Glasgow yesterday. I’ve just been out for its maiden ride and whilst it is hard work, for a lard monster like me on anything more than a gentle incline, it is a lot of fun!

The wettest June in a million years - something like that anyway. Between the showers, in Perthshire at least, there had been some beautiful sunshine. It has brought out the colours in the countryside and makes riding a pleasure, if not a little damp.

I made it out to Craigvinean last night on my own and took the opportunity to explore a couple of trails I’ve only previously been able to make a mental note of. There is some wonderful singletrack between the Hermitage and the main Craigvinean fire road, and some more between the fire road and the bottom of the down hill track.

Route on bikely here.  Map of the route here.

It wouldn’t be fair to leave the Pitmedden Forest story with the enduring image of our resident action man going base over apex. So here is another shot of him making a succesful ride over the see saw.
